Hand stitched and screen printed promotional zine created for our second self initiated project entitled ‘No Vacancy’. An exhibition of visual art based on the poetry of Greg Gibson, explores overpopulation by imaging a crowed hotel used a refuge by survivors of a natural disaster. Featuring work from Young Pines members – Will Daw, Christine Gore and Thom Isom. A limited run of 50 zines have been created and used as invites for the show opening March 2012.

Design and illustrations for Liverpool based football, fashion and lifestyle publication, Spiel. We were approached to create a one-off run of limited edition gift packs – each stamped by hand and featuring Christmas based articles and poster designed by Young Pines.

Poster design for one of three of The Wombats homecoming gigs in Liverpool for Screenadelica. The poster was to be sold at the concert, as well as on the Screenadelica online store with a limited signed and numbered print run of 100. Screenprinted, 3 colours, size A2.

I’ve probably never looked at as much porn as I have over the last few months or so- certainly not so much off-kilter porn anyway. The Young Pines project has kind of spilled over into bestiality territory which is nice. Looking for odd stuff for the Twitter and Facebook feeds has proved the old Internet rule 34- if it exists, there is pretty much certainly porn for it.

Writing about sex is challenging. Trying to make something sexy but not ridiculous is really hard- and the subject matter is kind of ridiculous anyway, which didn’t help. But it was good; There were a few weird moments (like when I realised I was writing a story about a goat getting off with a child) and I googled some pretty strange stuff about horses cocks etc, but I was in my element (and not just because of the cocks).

If I could ever get a job where I have to research things such as the proper term for holes in trees, or the history of fairy tales etc then I think I’d be happy for the rest of time. Doing an internship with Mercy is good in this respect as the weird and niche and wonderful is kind of what they deal in. They have given us the space to do what we want and loads of encouragement. Oh, and a bit of cash too.

It’d be good to come out of this with a clearer idea of how I can possibly get away with writing for a living- preferably at home in my pajamas, listening to Prog Rock.

This was a very open brief to design a cover for Manchester based artzine ‘OWT’.  Each month has a theme and this issue’s was ‘chance’.  I wanted to look at the network of possible routes that we navigate via chance mechanisms that take us to different places. I also wanted to have multiple covers so there was an element of chance in which cover people ended up with.  On the back cover there was a dot-to-dot version of the front cover network shape that people could complete themselves, again pushing the idea of chance and encouraging audience interaction with the zine.

Typography installations created for Liverpool based music night Chibuku. The installations were used throughout their entire new season promotion with a photo-shoot, viral video and flyer conducted entirely by Young Pines. Several installations were also place around the city of Liverpool in the run up to the event.
